The Travel & Adventure Show is one of our favorite ways to beat the winter travel blues! We recently attended this energizing event in Chicago, and returned brimming with inspiration to share with fellow travel lovers.

The Travel & Adventure Show is a traveler’s dream – a convention where destinations from around the world vie for your attention with colorful booths and enticing promotions. Alongside tourism boards, you’ll find expert speakers dishing out invaluable travel advice and recounting spellbinding tales from the road less traveled.

One such speaker was Andrew McCarthy, a member of the BRAT pack who is also a travel writer. He has chronicled his journeys over the years for National Geographic and has written several travel books. McCarthy regaled the audience with a simple but profound lesson: Don’t be afraid to say yes to opportunity. One spontaneous decision in his youth to play a round of golf in Ireland set the course for a lifetime of adventure, eventually leading him to meet his wife.

Pauline Frommer gave a very moving talk about the lessons she learned from her late father, Arthur Frommer, who passed away at the end of 2024. Arthur was a pioneer in the travel guidebook industry when he was stationed in Germany during the Korean war and wrote a travel guide for GIs that has morphed into the Frommers empire of today. Probably one of my favorite quotes of his that Pauline shared is this: “At its best, travel should challenge our preconceptions and most cherished views, cause us to rethink our assumptions, shake us a bit, make us broader minded and more understanding.”

We also caught presentations by savvy travel experts like Russell Hannon, who optimizes every trip with ingenious cost-cutting strategies. One brilliant tip? Airports can be a stressful maze of chaos, especially when flight delays and cancellations throw a wrench into your travel plans. But with the right mindset and tactics, you can navigate these hurdles like a seasoned jet-setter. Recently, we put some expert tips to the test and emerged victorious against the travel gods. Let us share our secrets so you too can soar above travel turbulence.

Tips to get where you're going

At the Travel & Adventure Show, renowned travel expert Samantha Brown imparted some sage advice for smoother journeys:

Fly major airlines over budget carriers when possible.
Book the earliest flights to reduce cancellation risks.
Avoid layovers which can complicate things.
Arrive at the airport very early – you can never be too early!

We heeded tips 1 and 4 by booking an early morning flight on American Airlines from Detroit to Greenville. Little did we know how valuable the other tips would prove to be.

This trip to Greenville was full of flight issues. Mechanical issues in Charlotte delayed the arrival of our Detroit-bound plane. But because we arrived at the airport very early per Samantha’s advice, we snagged seats on an earlier departing flight – avoiding a missed connection in Charlotte. American’s staff communicated well and made rebooking a breeze through their app and at the desk. Kudos to them for stellar service!

Flight Delays

On the return, a tarmac delay in Greenville nearly made us miss our connection to Detroit. As we inched towards the gate, visions of sprinting through the Charlotte airport danced in our heads.

But we didn’t panic. We employed Samantha’s savviest tactic – knowing the later flight options out of that airport. As soon as we departed the plane, one of us immediately called American’s priority line and swapped us to the next Detroit flight – skipping the inevitable rebooking queue.

By the time we collected our bags, the boarding door for our original flight was likely closed. Thanks to quick thinking and being knowledgeable travelers, we avoided a nightmare scenario.

Be Prepared

Tips for Conquering Delays:

Fly early and skip layovers when possible to reduce chances of delays/cancellations
Research later flight options from the airport to your destination
Have that flight info and your confirmation details handy
Call the airline as soon as a delay is announced to get rebooked ahead of the pack

When those open-ended dates stare back at you with infinite possibilities, it can feel both exhilarating and overwhelming. Where to even begin? This is where the real journey starts – with a mindset of flexibility. Resist the urge to lock yourself into just one dream destination. Instead, keep an open list of contenders, allowing you to pounce on the best deals and unique opportunities that arise.

As seasoned globetrotters, we have a running list of places calling our names, stored digitally but also etched into our minds’ eye. This allows us to compare prices across multiple locations to maximize every hard-earned dollar. Maybe it’s an unexpected flight deal to Puerto Rico over the holidays or a last-minute cruise up the California coast. By staying open, the world is quite literally your oyster.

With your contenders in place, it’s time to start searching for flights and accommodations to gauge potential costs. We hunt for airfare first since those prices are the most volatile and fleeting. The moment we spot an airfare deal that sparks joy, we pounce before it disappears into the ether.

6 Tips for Travel while Working Remotely

As travel bloggers, we’re often asked how we manage to travel so frequently while still getting work done. The truth is, with some strategic planning and the right tools, working remotely from almost anywhere in the world is possible. On our latest adventure through Europe, we put our digital nomad skills to the test – and today, we’re telling you how we did it.

From tapping into time zone differences to finding the ideal workspace, join us as we dive into the heart of combining work and wanderlust. Get ready to be inspired to embrace the remote lifestyle and take your office off the beaten path.

Mastering the time zone game

One of our top tips for working on the road? Use time differences to your advantage. When heading west to mountain time, Chris was able to start his workday bright and early, wrapping up by mid-afternoon. This allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in exploring destinations like the Black Hills in the evening hours when most of the crowds had departed.

Heading east provides its perks too. In Europe last summer, we found ourselves with crowd-free mornings to wander cobblestone streets before Chris clocked in. With a 5-6 hour time difference, he could work until the late evening hours just in time for a leisurely European dinner.

Strategizing your schedule for flexibility

Of course, making remote work a success requires careful coordination with your employer. Before any big trips, Chris makes a point to arrange his schedule around our travel plans as much as possible. This ensures he can be fully present for meetings and deadlines while still leaving room for epic adventures.

It’s also crucial to build in breaks that allow you to actually experience your surroundings. For Chris, this means taking short walks every few hours – whether it’s strolling to the beach in Traverse City, grabbing coffee in Custer, or simply stepping out on the balcony to soak in views of the Douro River in Porto.

Choosing the right home base

Where you stay can make or break the remote work experience. When traveling together, we prioritize accommodations with dedicated workspaces separated from the main living area. This ensures I’m not inadvertently photo-bombing Chris’s video calls!

One standout was the Roosevelt Inn & Suites in North Dakota, which featured full kitchens and separate living rooms – the perfect set up for Chris to work uninterrupted. Other stellar options are extended-stay hotels like Country Inns & Suites with living room alcoves. Check out TripAdvisor.com to find your perfect home base for remote work!

Don’t forget to check reviews and listings for bandwidth speeds too. While Chris doesn’t need ultra-high internet for his daily tasks, a stable connection is crucial for video meetings and large file transfers.

Choose travel-friendly gear

Just like packing his favorite travel gear, Chris is selective about the tech equipment he brings when we travel. A few must-haves? A lightweight laptop with long battery life and a portable second screen solution like a trifold monitor or an iPad that can double as a secondary display.

A travel router with VPN capabilities to keep his online activities secure across public networks is a must. This proved invaluable during our transatlantic cruise when we could share a premium internet package across devices. Having multiple cellular data options through different carriers ensures Chris has the power and connectivity to work from anywhere that has cell signal. Don’t forget, international power adapters are a must when traveling overseas.

Cruising into productivity

Speaking of cruising, our recent transatlantic voyage allowed us to truly test the limits of remote work at sea. While the ship’s traditional satellite internet proved challenging for video calls and large file transfers, Chris was able to participate in meetings by calling in using a VoIP service.

He also got resourceful by remoting into a cloud server when bandwidth was too low for uploading and downloading files directly. This allowed work to progress smoothly, even in the middle of the Atlantic with zero cell signal.

For the best connectivity, cruise lines are rapidly rolling out SpaceX’s Starlink internet which provides higher speeds and reliability. Chris experienced the benefits first-hand on a previous cruise and can’t recommend it enough for aspiring cruise-working digital nomads.

The remote work mindset

More than any specific strategy or gear, the most important element of working remotely is the right mindset. It requires flexibility, creative problem-solving, and a willingness to adapt to different environments – but the payoff is worth it.

As Chris says, “I want people to know that I can do my job wherever I am.” With thoughtful planning and a bit of tech-savvy, you too can embrace the nomadic lifestyle.
